How I Make Money Selling On Kijiji

When Ebay was in its heyday and everyone was buying & selling, I was one of those sellers that actually did very good. If I didn’t do it all myself, I could have pushed it up a notch. Why I didn’t buy ebay stock when it was cheap and has since split so many times, that alone could have made anyone a millionaire (and did for some). I guess I was busy enough that I didn’t have time to do any kind of financial planning let alone spending. I was able to gather a down payment for a house that I shortly flipped for a nice profit, which eventually led to owning a really nice home and having some investments. Those were the days.

Now it’s much harder to make money from Ebay, although I’m sure some still do. But when you take the high costs of shipping and all the fees you have to pay, it just doesn’t seem worth it.

Kijiji, on the other hand, is a free classified site that targets locally. Funny that it is owned by Ebay. They probably understood that a craigslist type of site combined with the ebay layout, minus the shipping costs, was much needed.

Generally the site is free to buy & sell locally, unless you want some added perks (which cost) that aren’t necessary. I have found buying and selling on kijiji another source of making money and a good way to pay off some debt. You can meet up with the buyer or seller locally to complete the transaction, not worrying about shipping the items or taking any payment other than cash.

I Started Selling On Kijiji With No Money

First I got rid of some stuff that I had hanging around that I had been meaning to clear out. That included some collectible items that I collected over the years.

I reinvested some of the money by buying stuff cheap on kijiji and then reselling it. To find out what to sell, I searched through the Want Ads to see what people were looking for.

I also regularly check the Free Stuff section too because many times you can get things for free that you can resell. One time someone was moving and was giving their doll collection away that I was able to get for free. And I turned that free investment into a $300 profit.

You don’t need to invest money to sell on kijiji, just do one (or all) of these things to get started:

  • clear out things you have lying around that you no longer need
  • find free stuff on kijiji you can sell
  • sell someone else’s items and charge a commission

#1 Item I’ve Had The Most Success Selling On Kijiji

Although I’ve sold a variety of items, there doesn’t seem to be a limit to what type of things you can sell, as always seems to be a buyer (sooner or later) that wants it. But the one item that I particularly had the most success in selling quickly on kijiji, is cell phones. Everyone and their dog has a cellphone, so it’s a no-brainer that it would be a hot item to sell. I though have concentrated more on android phones (mostly Samsung phones) rather than iphones.

I’ve found good deals on kijiji buying second-hand cell phones and reselling them on kijiji for a profit. That’s the first item that sold (from the items I was selling) in my making money experiment. A good clue as to what item sells faster!

Pricing Items To Sell Quickly

When deciding what to price something to sell on Kijiji, the best way is to compare prices on Ebay. This way you get a good idea of what similar products are going for and, if you price it just slightly lower, you can make a faster sale.

The same thing when you are buying something, look at Ebay for what it is selling for and make sure you buy cheaper than those prices. The idea is that if you can get things cheap enough, you can easily resell for a profit.

Also, check out what others are selling similar types of items on kijiji. This won’t give you an exact price because some underprice (buy those!) and others may overprice (avoid those!). Sometimes there are varying factors involved like the condition of the item. Just weigh in everything before pricing so you can sell quickly. And you can always drop the price a little if you aren’t getting any replies.

Don’t Let Ads Go Stale – Stay On Top Of  It

Make sure to delete and relist your ads regularly so they stay fresh as can quickly fall of the first page, especially in categories like collectibles and cell phones. The first page of each category gets the most eyeballs and if they fall off to page 30 (unless someone is searching only for a specific item), less people are seeing it.

An ad placed two weeks or more ago will give the impression that your item isn’t selling. Less people are seeing it and less chance of getting a reply or a sale. Anyone who does will try to lowball you to get it cheaper.

Give the impression the ad is freshly sliced and they better hurry up and buy before someone else does!

  • Kijiji has become garbage thanks to retailers. They relist their 1000’s of items daily, always ask a low amount like 19.95 when the item is actually 79.95 when you look at it etc. They stay on page one of the fresh and the cheap indexes and they throw 1000’s of items in there making it hard to find anything else in some categories.

eBay doesn’t care, you can’t block these sellers, you can’t block dealers most of the time, it’s just extremely time consuming to go through kijiji. Also, that generic auto-message asking if it’s still available… I swear some people push the button just to troll.

    • Yes in popular categories it’s difficult to stay on the first page. Sure there are sellers that constantly flood their products to stay on the top page and use tricks to lure you to them. But that doesn’t mean yours won’t get seen or less likely to make a sale. You also have to keep relisting to keep them fresh. I mean if you want to make money on kijiji, you would spend the time to do that daily. And it really depends on what you are selling as not everyone searches just looking through the categories. It may be something specific they are looking for so yours can come up. It all depends on what type of items you are selling, your pricing and staying on top of it.

Agreed that “Hi, is this still available” message is super annoying. At a click of a button, Kijiji made it easy for trolls to keep on trolling!
