I Sold A Domain Name For $2500 Without Doing Anything!

It was Christmas Eve when I got an email from someone, on one of my websites, asking me if I’m interested in selling my domain name and, if so, name my price. Okay once in a while I get these types of emails but usually, they are just scammers who want to trick you to get money out of you and if they were really interested in purchasing the domain name, it would be next to nothing. I mean I didn’t have my domain name advertised anywhere but it is known to happen that domain buyers will email you if they really want the domain name.

I was about to ignore this email but then I hesitated and thought maybe to check first as had the guy’s name, which was on an icloud email address (not the usual scammer unheard of masked ones), as well had his IP address too. So what I did is I took the email address and googled it. Yes I googled the email address to see if I could find out anything about this person, say if was a scammer or anything else.

Well he turned out to be legit and owned a very large site that happened to be in the same type of niche my site was about. It looked pretty clear that he was a millionaire businessman so had plenty of money to invest.

He probably wanted my domain name because it was a  .com and was ranking for specific keywords, and I was suspecting the site below my ranking may also have been his too. It’s not like it was getting a whole lot of traffic or anything but it was starting to increase.  Plus it had an established site, over 3 years old.

So I emailed him back and instead of giving him a price, I said that I’ve had a couple of offers before and I’m not willing to sell for a low price.  I also made it clear that if he is a serious buyer to give me an idea of the price range he would be willing to pay. I must emphasize never to leave your cards open on the table just in case you undercut yourself by not knowing the value of what you have.

In my mind, I was reminded of the domain scam a few years ago that they were emailing sites offering $3,000 so I was thinking if that was what he would offer, then I would wonder, so this seemed to be my target price, although at first I thought $5,000.

Anyway, he promptly replied me and said around the $2,000 range. For which I replied how about $3,000 since that number stuck in my head and realizing no way was I going to be able to get $5,000 out of him. Then he replied back said it wasn’t worth it to him at $3,000 but he’d be willing to go to $2,500.

Yeah right! We both playing our cards to get the best deal for ourselves. Well I agreed to his $2,500 because, even though I thought it was worth more, it’s money I could use to make more money.

We used an online escrow service and the deal was done in a matter of a couple weeks! I paid 3 years of registrations on this domain for under $40 through Namecheap. The hosting is shared with my other sites so that is nominal too. I also earned money from the site the domain was on, mainly outsourcing, but lately, I was starting to see an increase in traffic and got some customers that way too.

But it was no big deal for me to sell the domain name and move the site to another domain name. After all, he only wanted the domain name, not the website. If I had to include the website then it would have been sold as a business and I would have expected a lot more.

I’m hoping he’ll contact me again about the new domain name once it competes against one of his sites. And I purchased various domain extensions of it to make sure he can’t back me in a corner or pull the rug from under me in any negotiations!

Now that was an easy $2500 over the holidays without doing any work to earn it!

If someone offered me a large sum for this domain name (achievergirl.com), I would gladly take it…even throw in the site… after all I have a million dollar goal to achieve, so everything is for sale (except my cat!)

Update: After that surprise sale, I decided to get back into domain investing where I have been successfully buying and selling domains since. Sometimes it takes only a small investment for a big payout, as I found out.

Flipping domains is another way to make money online and doesn’t need much for start-up costs.  I mean if you hand register a domain, is less than $15 for a year which gives you plenty of time to flip the domain for profit. Or you can look for deals on domain auction sites and forums. Check out my Domain Names For Sale and make me an offer!

If you are interested in making money flipping domain names, I recommend you start by getting this low-priced hosting as they include a free domain name, a 1-click wordpress and ssl certificate. I prefer to use my own hosting to showcase the domains rather than using a domain parking service. On each domain, I put a for sale page so it makes it easy for people to contact me directly. Then I list them for free in various places like Sedo, Afternic and domain forums. Once you have that all set up, there really isn’t any additional work involved, just wait for a sale or if looking to sell quickly promote around and put them on Flippa or Godaddy auctions.
