My cat has more followers than me on instagram, over 4,000. That shouldn’t be a surprise because cats are popular on instagram and there is a huge community of cat lovers and growing day by day. Who doesn’t like to start their day without checking some of the cute cat pics on instagram.
Maybe you couldn’t find ways to get yourself popular on instagram but what about your kitty? I bet you could increase followers just by taking pics of your cat and regularly posting them to instagram.
And you don’t need a special camera either, as can easily use the one on your phone and instantly upload them with the instagram app.
Sure there are a lot of cats on instagram and you might feel it is over saturated but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your kitty popular too.
Many don’t follow the simple rules to stand out from the crowd or even work on growing their cat account. Those that do, have tens of thousands of followers.
My cat by now should have a lot more followers than she does, as also has a touching survival story that got featured on a famous cat account which gained her an additional 1200 new followers.

Some of the ones who started on instagram around her time (and after), have over 10,000 or are close to it. They post pics daily (some even two to three times a day) and interact with others on instagram.
Yes, there is some work involved unless you got lucky by going viral like Nala cat did when her pic was posted on Reddit a few years back.
For a cat account on instagram, Nala has the most followers with over 3 million. She is an influencer and has become a brand, with her own products sold through her website. That means with the amount of followers she has, any advertising on her account commands top dollar. She definitely is instagram famous and a million dollar cat!

Okay so not all of us have a Nala cat or some others, on instagram, like Grumpy Cat, Venus The Two Face Cat, Smoothie The Cat, White Coffee Cat (brother of Nala), Lil Bub who each have over a million followers. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get followers in the tens of thousands, as certainly can as many have and do. It’s really when you have over 10,000 followers you can attract advertisers to make money and get some free products for your cat.
Even if you have less followers and have a product for cats, you have a target audience to promote it to. So put on those thinking caps if you want to make money from your cat instagram account. Even can promote affiliate products, doesn’t have to be your own, and earn commissions from them.
I eventually want to publish a book about my cat’s story and with a lot of instagram followers, I would already have a target audience. I did try to crowdfund to raise the funds for the book but wasn’t successful due to didn’t have time to continually promote it and couldn’t convince followers to, so either I don’t have enough followers, didn’t have the right approach or maybe they just wanted the finished product before purchasing. I have to figure that one out. As in anything, you have to be constantly promoting so have to plan a strategy for that.

How To Grow A Cat Account On Instagram:
- Upload a cute cat pic once or twice every single day. Don’t forget videos too as they tend to get more views and can easily go viral if you really caught a cute or funny moment. It sometimes is not easy to get a cat to pose, like my cat knows the camera and turns away or squints her eyes. Dangle a treat above or her favorite toy to get her looking at the camera.
- Make sure to have a caption, a simple line or two will do, saying something about the pic or from the cat’s perspective of what may be thinking or saying.
- Use hashtags so the post gets noticed. You are allowed up to 30 and I suggest you use all of them to build your account. Popular ones are like #cat #cats #catsofinstagram #catsoninstagram #catoftheday #catpic #catpics #cutecat #cutecats #catlover #catlovers
- Like and follow other cat accounts. Some go overboard in doing this initially by following too many accounts at once (bear in mind instagram’s hourly and daily limits) in the hopes to increase their following faster, and many do follow back. But the best way is to follow and like a steady number of accounts on a daily basis so it naturally builds up. And make sure you are interacting with your followers on your account as well as on others by commenting.
- Check out what the other cat accounts are doing on instagram to get ideas to succeed.
Some can quickly grow their cat account while others take a longer time. It all depends on how much time and effort you put into growing it…but also on your cat too. Make sure to put the best adorable pics and use the instagram filters to improve them.

I know my cat can get a lot more followers and if I had more time in the day, I could build up her account even faster.
One other way is trying to get some of those cat accounts with higher followings in the tens of thousands to mention your cat or get featured on some of the many featured cat accounts such as @cats_of_instagram and @catsoninstagram (both each have over a million followers). This can naturally happen with the right pics (and videos) and by tagging those cat feature accounts.

Networking with other cat accounts is an ideal way to build up your cat account. The cat community on instagram is a large network of cat lovers and owners, that can help in increasing your cat’s followers.
I thought out of the box in how to grow my cat account by starting two pet feature accounts (a cat and a dog one too). As the cat feature account grows (right now is over 6,000 followers) means that I have an extra account to promote my cat as well. But now that I have 4 accounts on instagram (my own, my cat’s, cat feature and dog feature), I made it really tough on myself in growing them. I just don’t have the time to spend on them that I should because I have other commitments as have to be earning money to live!

I also welcome donations for features (contact me here) as it will help support my cat & I in getting her survival story out (in a book) and a portion of future sales will be donated to help homeless cats. Every cat deserves a loving forever home!
I hope I have given you the insight and enough ideas to get your cat account started on instagram. And if you have more than one cat, make sure to have an account for each one as that’s a good way to cross-promote each account, especially if one is growing faster than the other one.
Look at @nala_cat as an example, her owner added an account for @white_coffee_cat and another for @hello_luna_rose, the three cats she owns. Nala’s account cross-promoted Coffee to get over a million followers. Luna Rose gets promoted by both those two accounts and she right now has a following of over 300,000. That means her owner is making money off three cats, by cross-promoting each one, while promoting all of the cats products on Nala’s website.
